DAUPHIN- Dauphin- Swan River Canadian Alliance MP Inky Mark
joined others across the province today, in wishing Manitoba a "Happy
Birthday!" It was on this date, 130 years ago, that the Manitoba Act was
signed in Parliament. The following is a statement issued by Mark to,
excuse the pun, mark the occasion.
"Friday May 12th marks the 130th Anniversary of the passing of the Manitoba Act. It would lead to Manitoba's uniting with the other provinces of Confederation in the summer of 1870. As well I pay tribute tomorrow to Manitoba's flag, which was also proclaimed on May 12th, some 34 years ago.
How does one sum up a province's history and legacy in limited space?
When you envision Manitoba- you think of the Buffalo which graces the coat of arms, or the prairie crocus, our official flower, in bloom.
When you say Manitoba- you think of Louis Riel, founder of a province, a leader of people, and of course a lightning rod in early politics.
When you mention Manitoba- you imagine diversity... diversity from the northern section with the role of Hudson Bay and mining, to the south with agriculture and manufacturing. And sporting activities like fishing and hunting everywhere in between.
Friendly Manitoba is the slogan, and it is true.
And although Winnipeg is the capital and hub of activity, my riding of Dauphin-Swan River is arguably the most picturesque.
I invite all to keep Manitoba in mind when they are planning vacations this summer. And I join with my fellow Manitoba colleagues in this House in saying Happy Birthday Manitoba... "
