Caplan's remarks indefensible

Ottawa- Citizenship and Immigration Critic, Inky Mark, called on Jean Chretien once again to relieve Immigration Minister Elinor Caplan from her post.

The echo call for removal stems from her comments that Canadian Alliance supporters were "racists, bigots and Holocaust deniers" made during the federal election and her continued refusal to apologize. Caplan has since said, "she was simply telling it like it is."

"Telling it like it is, is all well and good, but a Minister in her position cannot make comments which show a lack of tolerance. She has personally insulted some 3 million Canadian citizens, and shows no sign of remorse for her actions. How will she continue to be a credible in the eyes of Canadians with behavior so unbecoming of a Minister of the Crown," Mark said.

Mark went on to say that Caplan's portfolio puts her in a position to deal with a diversity of demographics on a daily basis. He wondered if she would be able to effectively handle that kind of responsibility without letting her intolerance get in the way.

"The Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration needs a person who can deal with diversity daily. I'm not sure Mrs. Caplan can be tolerant towards the diverse demographics involved here. She should be relieved of her post before more intolerant comments are made," Mark concluded.
