Ottawa- Member of Parliament, Inky Mark, says that an upcoming train trip to Ottawa shows that farmers in Western Canada are not giving up the fight for fairness.
The "On To Ottawa Trek" is a train trip being planned by farmer Murray Downing of Reston, Manitoba. Downing hopes to get enough interest in this trip to involve all 4 Western provinces. The trek is to promote the cause of farmers who continue to fight for financial aid in the wake of a now two-year cash crisis for their industry.
"I support Mr. Downing and his efforts to raise awareness of the plight of this country's farmers. I know he has been instrumental in organizing some of the farm rallies held on major highways between Saskatchewan and Manitoba. This train trip is necessary and I hope he gets the support he is looking for from rural Canadians. It is something for every Canadian to get involved in," Mark said.
"We all need to do our part to keep up the pressure on the Federal Government to help the farmers. The farmers have been lied to and mislead for too long. They need financial help and they need it now. I encourage all MPs to get on board with this effort."
The Manitoba portion of the trek should leave on January 25, 2001 and will likely arrive in Ottawa just before the official opening of Parliament on January 29, 2001. Mark said his door is always open to those who arrive in Ottawa. Mark also said he would try to get official recognition of the group by the Speaker of the House of Commons during Question Period while the group is in Ottawa.
Anyone interested in joining this train trip or who wants more information, please contact Murray Downing at 204-877-3748.
