Inky Mark, MP |
Dauphin-Swan River |
December 14, 2001
Ottawa—Inky Mark, MP for Dauphin-Swan River wants to make it clear to all that it was the Canadian Alliance who didn’t want him, not the other way around.
“I read the media reports this morning. They all claim that I did not renew my membership and therefore National Council didn’t have to vote on taking mine away. The truth of the matter is that the Canadian Alliance refused to renew my membership long before they voted on stripping the others DRC members of theirs,” Mark said.
Mark added that he tried to renew his membership in late summer of this year, but his application was refused on the grounds that National Council might vote to take his membership away. Almost four months lapsed in between the Party refusing to accept Mark’s renewal and the other DRC MPs losing their memberships.
Disheartening as it was to see his colleagues lose their memberships, Mark said it wasn’t an altogether unexpected move on the part of the Canadian Alliance. The loss of the Party’s second founding member, that being Deborah Grey, will be felt the most.
“It’s no longer a matter of the leadership. The Party has turned against it’s own principles. National Council voted to strip memberships of MPs who chose to represent their constituents’ wishes ahead of the Party. That’s what this Party was built on. It sets a dangerous precedent for the remaining Caucus and future MPs who believe those they represent are more important than the banner they ran under to get elected,” Mark concluded.
